Broadway Shows
If you happen to live in New York like I do, you probably already know that the world is your oyster, but for the rest of you, you simply don't understand what your missing.
First of all, there is central park which is, hands down, the best urban park in the entire country. Any time of day, any day of the week, there is always something going on there, be it roller skaters doing tricks, musicians playing for change, or one of the many festivals.
There is nothing better to do on a nice spring day than to take my lovely wife on a stroll through Central Park, and then later that
evening to a play in the village or one of the current broadway shows.
Her favorite of the current broadway shows is Cats, which has been playing forever and probably never will stop. The only other of the current broadway shows which plays like that is the Phantom of the Opera, which is known to have the longest continuous run of any show in any city ever, period.
Besides that, there are also off broadway shows, which can let you see the works of up and coming artists and expose you to perhaps a more avant garde and sophisticated theatre experience.
However, sophistication is by no means lacking on Broadway.
Harold Pinters newest play is among the current broadway shows, as are several works by modern scholars and French existentiallists. There is even a musical adaptation of Sarte's angstful classic “No Exit” with a soundtrack done by Phillip Glass of all things.
These are the kind of productions you would miss out on in another city, the artfulness and majesty of current broadway shows.Of course, there are other things besides current broadway shows to see in the city.
There is always something playing musically, no matter what your taste. If you are a jazz fan, it is probably the greatest city in the world for you to live in, because nowhere is there a more competitive atmosphere, or a more virtuouso level of musical performance than New York city.
But, like any city of its size, NYC can offer a wide variety of different music, from punk to classical, from bluegrass to blues. All you have to know is what you want to see and what neighborhood to go to to see it.
In some parts of Soho and the village, and even in Brooklyn, you can practically just walk down the street listening to hear gorgeous music wafting out everywhere.
